BAT: Regulatory Affairs / Comms. Executive

BAT is recruiting for a Regulatory Affairs & External Communications Executive.

Reports to: Regulatory Affairs & External Communications Manager

Principal Accountabilities:

* To contribute to business sustainability by supporting efforts to shape the business environment with relevant information, issue analysis and advocacy
* To contribute to the achievement of business objectives by maximising the opportunities for success in regulatory engagement
* To provide area-specific communication content that supports our regulatory agenda
* To ensure that Regulatory campaigns and strategies are developed with materials which establish BAT as a trusted partner of regulators and a leading authority on tobacco control issues across Nigeria area
* To collate information from company tools that enables the Regulatory Affairs department to identify, measure and focus engagement activities effectively.
* Set the standard for quality and depth of issue analysis to advance understanding of regulatory issues around the Region
* To provide advocacy that ensures that engagement is relevant to tobacco control thinking, both current and future in order to maximise traction with stakeholders
* To participate in company projects as and when required
* To provide guidance to other functions on regulatory positions
* Support the development of knowledge and understanding of regulatory issues amongst regulatory managers and identified personnel through the provision of tailored packages of relevant material
* Support the anticipation of regulatory issues through effective analysis and communication of trends and potential future tobacco control scenarios
* Maintain and develop the Regulation Management Tool and the Stakeholder Engagement Model as key platforms for managing consistency of regulatory approach across the area
* Define and commission research projects to support specific CORA requirements as necessary
* To assist others, including but not limited to, Management Trainees in the CORA to acquire knowledge related to the function
* Directly support the BATN Regulatory Affairs department, relevant Area CORA Managers and the BATNA CORA team by ensuring that they are up to date with latest developments on regulatory positions
* Directly support BATN Regulatory Affairs department, relevant Area CORA Managers and the BATN CORA team with updates on anticipated Tobacco Control developments as well as immediate response to requests for analysis
* Leverage value of contribution to ensure flow of information on regulatory status in end markets throughout the AME regional network
* Ensure effective relationships with BATN legal resources to manage quality and risk
* Develop and maintain relationships outside of the area and region to ensure availability of accurate, evidence based information on regulatory issues
* To ensure the continuous improvement of BATN’s direct regulatory engagement through the provision of creative advocacy and insightful analysis of tobacco control policy issues as they apply to the NIGERIA area
* To generate creative campaign options for specific issues to develop traction with Regulators/public opinion and/or provide the basis for external communications which may stimulate constructive debate on Tobacco Control issues

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

* Demonstrates ability to apply a deep understanding and knowledge of the industry to a wide range of situations and play a key role in decisions made
* Demonstrates appreciation of reputation issues and ability to apply in the context of acceptable regulatory campaign tactics.
* Demonstrates understanding of litigation such that risk is minimised (through reference to specialist resource at the right time) and on illicit trade is able to apply deep knowledge to develop appropriate compelling stories for key stakeholders
* Demonstrates full understanding of Group positions, deep knowledge of tobacco control in the real world and ability to apply both to business issues and specific tobacco control challenges.
* Demonstrates effectiveness in engagement, able to build long term relationships, deal with confrontation and yet retain the invitation to dialogue
* Demonstrates understanding of role of external communications in shaping opinion & use of techniques to achieve desired outcome.
* Educated to degree level or preferably beyond
* Ideally 2 – 3 years’ experience working in political lobbying research or the tobacco industry or other commercial activity which requires aptitude for in-depth analysis of issues
* Cross functional appreciation of the business – marketing, operations, CORA, finance, legal
* Attention to detail
* Active interest in tobacco and tobacco control issues, aptitude for absorbing and applying knowledge to the debate
* Cultural sensitivity
* Strong research skills – both desk based and potentially in commissioning research on specific areas
